#065: The Island of the Gods

A trip to Pulau Dewata / the Island of the Gods, or more commonly known as the island of Bali.

This was a family trip early last month, coinciding with the Eid/Hari Raya holidays, where we went to Bali and stayed a few nights at Seminyak and then a few more nights at Nusa Dua.

In amongst all the chaos of taking kids on a holiday, I managed to squeeze out some brief moments to venture out with the camera and captured moments on the streets and on the beaches.

It was my first time back in Bali since 2012. Many things have changed, but lots of things still look and feel the same, as best as I can remember them from over a decade ago. The architecture, the cultural artefacts, the food, and the people are all still quintessentially Bali, in a good and charming way. There’s a lot of talk about the Bali traffic nowadays, getting from place to place, but thankfully, this visit was during the low season, and it wasn’t as bad as I was thinking it would be and the weather was great.

So, in between minding the kids at the hotel and being able to walk around the streets, the photos below are of the moments that caught my eye. There wasn’t that much time, not for a proper photowalk at least, but I think I did get to capture some nice moments and scenery. A few shots towards the end were taken with my mobile phone when I went out during sunrise for a run along the beach. I managed to get three decent runs on three separate mornings, and the runs along the Nusa Dua area were great; the sunrise was spectacular, and the weather was very accommodating.

We also got to witness a condensed version of the Kecak dance performance during our stay in Nusa Dua, and I will share those photos in the next blog post.

The earlier photos in this series were taken during sunset at Seminyak beach. The broad beach really has a magical feel at sunset; reflections on the shallow water when the tide is out and the colours in the sky make it so photogenic. Then there are some photos from a short morning trip to Tanah Lot temple, some areas around Seminyak, and then the beach areas of Nusa Dua. If we had more time, I would have loved to walk more along the streets of Seminyak and maybe some other street areas of Bali, away from the beach. But maybe I’ll save that for a future trip, and hopefully it won’t be another decade before I head back to the Island of Gods.

Photos taken with the Nikon ZF and the 28mm/f2.8 lens, and the last few with the Google Pixel 6.

Cheers.
